Der Schwerpunkt dieser Zeitschrift liegt auf der Veröffentlichung von Beiträgen aus der Wasser-, Abwasser- und Abfallwirtschaft. Jede Ausgabe ist einem Schwerpunktthema wie beispielsweise Wassergüte, Abwassertechnik, Hochwasserschutz, Wasserkraftnutzung, Hydrologie, Abfallbehandlung, Stoffflussanalyse, Ressourcenmanagement usw. gewidmet. Neben wissenschaftlichen Originalarbeiten umfasst die ÖWAW ständige Rubriken zu aktuellen Entwicklungen in der Wasser- und Abfallwirtschaft, Berichte aus der wasser- und abfallwirtschaftlichen Praxis, einen umfassenden Veranstaltungskalender und die Verbandsnachrichten des Österreichischen Wasser- und Abfallwirtschaftsverbandes (ÖWAV).
